What is a Stocks & Shares ISA?

It is a tax efficient investment account regardless of what tax amount you pay compared to a normal investment account.

There are many benefits that come with a Stocks & Shares ISA:

  • No Tax on Dividend Income
  • You won't have to pay Capital Gains Tax on profits within your ISA
  • No need to inform your tax office (HMRC) that you have an ISA

What is the Tax on Dividend Income?

Dividend Income Tax is payable when the total dividend income is above the £2,000 tax free dividend allowance. Dividend income can also be used against your annual personal allowance which is currently £11,850.

Dividend income which exceeds the allowance will be taxed at the following dividend tax rates:
  • Basic rate tax payers pay 7.5%
  • Higher rate tax payers pay 32.5%
  • Additional rate tax payers pay 38.1%

What is Capital Gains Tax (CGT)?

CGT Is payable when an asset such as shares are sold with a profit.
The amount of tax payable is dependent on your income and is only applicable to the amount gained.
  • Basic rate tax payers pay 18% CGT
  • Higher rate tax payers pay 28% CGT
There is also a tax-exempt amount of £11,100 per year, which means if the value of the gain of an asset is:
  • Equal to or below this amount, there is no tax due.
  • Above this amount, then tax is due at the mentioned rates.
Below is an illustration of what you could potentially save in CGT if your investments are held within an ISA.
Investment Amount Sale Price Gain CGT Exempt Amount CGT Rate 18% CGT Rate 28% Potential Savings With an ISA
£5,000 £10,000 £5,000 £11,100 £0 £0 £0
£10,000 £20,000 £10,000 £11,100 £0 £0 £0
£15,000 £30,000 £15,000 £11,100 £702 £1,092 £702 - £1,092
£20,000 £40,000 £20,000 £11,100 £1,602 £2,492 £1,602 - £2,492

What is the ISA Allowance?

Every year the Government sets an annual ISA allowance/limit on how much you can invest in an ISA. This year the limit is £20,000, you can invest the full limit in a Stocks & Shares ISA, Cash ISA or a combination of both.

Any unused ISA allowance will not roll over to the following tax year however, you will instead receive a new additional annual limit set out by the Government to add on top of your existing ISA.

Please note: SVS does not offer a cash ISA account

Risk Warning: All investments carry risks. The price of shares and other financial investments, and the income derived from them, may fall as well as rise and the amount realised may be less than the original capital invested. There is an extra risk of losing money when shares are bought in a period of high volatility. The extent and value of any ISA tax advantages or benefits may vary according to your individual circumstances.

The levels and bases of taxation may be subject to change. Forecasts are not a reliable indicator of future performance and past performance is not a guarantee of future success. You should carefully consider your own financial circumstances before dealing in the stock market. You may not get back the full amount invested.
